Counseling Style

I believe that finding the right fit is essential for successful counseling and that the client/counselor relationship is the essence of effective counseling.  If I can establish with you a relationship that is genuine, where you feel well regarded and understood and where you feel emotionally safe, then I believe that you will be able to grow and change and thus, successfully resolve the issues that brought you to counseling.

My approach is also goal oriented.  You are seeking counseling for a specific reason so our sessions are spent working toward achieving the goals that brought you to counseling. You will find that I listen actively and intently to what you are saying.  I tend to be pretty active during a session and I ask questions, make observations and look for patterns in the aspects of your life that you share with me.   I use some cognitive behavioral therapy methods, particularly in the treatment of anxiety, depression, self esteem and eating disorders which may require you to do some specific tasks outside of our sessions.  I may also suggest outside assignments such as reading books, journaling or other writing.

My personal philosophy about counseling ... In my opinion, a good counselor doesn’t give you the answers but rather, helps you achieve the insight that will lead you toward making necessary changes in your thinking and behavior.
